Our journey began with improving water quality and the livelihoods of people.
We’re still on that journey.
We’ve just found some other issues to tackle along the way.
In 2013, Jim and Orr, were developing colour-changing biological sensors to monitor heavy metal contamination in drinking water. During their time in Nepal and Bangladesh, they began to understand the devastation caused by the textile dyeing industry on both the natural environment and on people’s lives. Instead of continuing their project, they did something many might hesitate to do, they decided to tackle one of the largest and most complex issues facing one of the largest and most complex industries in the world.
It’s safe to say that since 2014, they’ve devoted all of their efforts to making this happen.

The team
We have a phenomenal team with a huge range of expertise and lived experience. While our mission is to transform an industry, we can get there faster— and enjoy the journey— by creating a great place to work.
While technology is pretty cool, anyone working in innovation knows that it’s driven by the team behind it. That’s why, alongside our brilliant process, what we’re most proud of is our stellar team. A highly interdisciplinary team of brilliant people spanning the requisite types of functional and domain expertise: scientific, administrative, sales, operational, informatics and textiles.

Norwich Research Park
This is where Colorifix was founded and it's a place that holds deep meaning for us, where our team—ranging from the visionary scientists in Microbial Engineering to the creative colourists and dedicated finance team—brings our mission to life. It's here that our colours begin their journey, meticulously developed and tested before they continue to our pilot plant in Cambridge.
Portugal
In Portugal we have a site for manufacturing our fermentation hardware and the media (food for the microorganisms), both of which we are part-manufacturing in-house. This is where the colour reaches its final stage. Here, our brilliant Implementation team works closely with customers to implement our bioreactors and train them to use our technology. It’s where the culmination of our efforts comes to life—once the colour has passed every test and is perfected, it’s ready to make its mark on the world, heading straight to the customer’s site.
